I know I talk a lot about awesome, body safe toys that are also quite pricey but there is a love of my toy life that you may not know about, that you would probably be surprised by and that is, frankly, super-inexpensive. This great love? The vibes that are sometimes known as “slimline” vibrators, other times they are referred to as smoothies (my preferred name and what I will be using from here on out). The big ones that run off C batteries (and generally come with a piece of paper in the battery compartment that must stay there to prevent battery rattling- true story). Super-simple, hard plastic- and thus non-porous and generally body safe (watch out for things like pigments)- and totally budget-friendly and, the first kind of toy I had an orgasm with (fun piece of trivia there!), these vibrators hold a special place in my heart.
So, what’s the appeal to a sex toy snob like me? You’ll find out in a minute, but first a bit on my quest to keep one of these wonders of vibrator simplicity in my life. Because, it has been a quest, the thing is I have noticed is that the smoothie vibes have gotten smaller – 6 inches as opposed to almost 8 and slimmer – less powerful – they run off AA batteries instead of Cs, it doesn’t always equal less power but it feels flimsier to me- and all-around less beefy. The C battery smoothies seem way harder to come by so I jump on them when I get the chance. I still have my original one and I have one that I found while I was traveling last year (it’s got pirates on it!) and I have been clinging to them for dear life. When I spotted the Tracey Cox Supersex Power Vibe I may have gotten unhealthily excited. One look at my smoothie line-up and I think you’ll see how well it fits in:
Now that you have the history, on to the review!
So, what’s the deal with this toy? This is like my original smoothie but done for a the new generation! It runs off 2 C batteries and is submersible.
How does it work? Easy-peasy with a twist base control… okay I just heard a few eye rolls (yes, I can hear you roll your eyes) Banish thoughts of cheap or old twist base controls, I know back in the day these controls often meant unpredictable power levels and a toy that was “on” whenever the base was securely attached. None of that here! This is a legitimate twist control that lets you smoothly dial-up the intensity.
How do they feel? It’s hard plastic – a nonporous, body safe material btw – which is the traditional material for a toy of this kind. But while my old school vibe was shiny plastic that is prone to getting cold and just looks kind of cheap the Supersex Power Vibe has a smooth, matte finish and feels a bit luxurious.. It also comes to a gentle peak rather than the severe point of the old days.
No, seriously, how does it feel? Well, if you’ve been reading me for any period of time you have noticed a recurring vibrator theme: I need my toys to cover a lot of surface area, I also need to be able to get some leverage on them for pushing against my body- they can’t be floppy. Add to that a motor that is reasonably strong and not buzzy and I’m pretty much good to go. Smoothies do the job- I tend to take one with me on all road trips! The awesome news? The Supersex Power Vibe more than delivers. For reals. Is it the strongest, most powerful vibe ever? No! Does it get the job done for me (who tends to require strength over large areas)? Yes, yes it does.
Here’s the deal, vibrators like this are like the Economy option when you rent a car- you are saving some money, you aren’t getting a ton of frills, you are getting from point A to point B. What makes this specific one nice is that Lovehoney has put some thought into the design so that it doesn’t feel so much like an “economy” toy – smooth finish, gentle curves, sensitive control and it’s submersible!. They have brought a bit of luxury to this budget friendly classic.
Things I’m down with:
- Decent power and size for $25 – that’s amazing
- It’s submersible for $25!
- Cleaning is a breeze. Soap and water will do it. – $25!!
- The price is fabulous 😉
Things that make me go grr:
- I should mention that it is a battery operated toy and that does add to your lifetime cost.
- I still don’t love the packaging on the Tracey Cox stuff- it al screams “This is for sex – which is enjoyed by conventionally attractive hetero folks!”
Tracey Cox Supersex Power Vibe retails for $24.99 (in case I hadn’t mentioned price) and you can get yours from Lovehoney.
Thank you to Lovehoney for giving me the Tracey Cox Supersex Power Vibe to test!
This product was provided to me free of change in exchange for my honest review. My review policy is simple: I will never lie about liking a product if I don’t (in fact I probably won’t even write about it) but when I do like something it’s hard to get me to shut up about it..
